Day 3: A Life-Changing Encounter: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

Today is the pinnacle of your adventure—a face-to-face meeting with the majestic mountain gorillas. After an early breakfast and a comprehensive briefing at the park headquarters, you will embark on a journey into one of Africa’s most ancient and biodiverse rainforests.

The Trek: Led by expert guides and trackers, your path winds through dense, misty vegetation and up bamboo-covered slopes. The trek is a true adventure; its duration (anywhere from 2 to 8 hours) and difficulty are as unpredictable as the wilderness itself. A good level of fitness is recommended, as the terrain can be steep and muddy. Yet, the challenge is all part of the profound experience.

The Encounter: The moment of discovery is pure magic. As you first lock eyes with a mighty silverback, every arduous step is instantly justified. You will be guided to a viewing spot, where you can spend a privileged one hour observing the gorilla family. Watch in quiet awe as they interact, feed, and play, an intimate glimpse into a world few ever witness.

Bwindi’s Grandeur: This is more than a gorilla sanctuary. Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an ancient forest that has evolved for over 25,000 years. Today’s adventure takes us deep into the renowned Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, a remote and exclusive wilderness famous for its unique tree-climbing lions and spectacular wildlife concentrations.

Morning: Journey to the Wild South
After breakfast, we embark on a scenic drive through the park’s stunning savannah grasslands, heading towards the less-traveled southern sector. Ishasha offers a truly authentic safari experience, characterized by its sense of untouched remoteness and high game densities. This area is a vital migratory corridor, often hosting some of the largest elephant herds in Uganda as they move between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Afternoon: The Legendary Tree-Climbing Lions & Wildlife Drives
Upon entering Ishasha, we begin an exhilarating game drive. Our primary quest is to find the sector’s most famous residents: the tree-climbing lions. Your expert guide will navigate to the area’s large fig trees, where these majestic predators are often spotted resting on the sturdy branches—a rare behavior that makes this population world-famous.

As the first light washes over the savannah, we venture into the territory of the park’s famous tree-climbing lions. This area, with its vast population of Uganda kob, acts as a magnet for predators, offering an excellent chance to witness the raw drama of the hunt. Keep your eyes peeled for lion prides, solitary leopards, towering elephants, and massive Cape buffalo, all viewed at breathtakingly close range.

Afternoon: A River of Life
In the afternoon, trade the safari vehicle for a boat and embark on a serene yet spectacular cruise along the Kazinga Channel. This natural waterway, connecting Lake George to Lake Edward, is a magnet for wildlife. Glide past massive pods of hippos noisily wallowing in the shallows, see buffaloes submerged up to their horns, and observe crocodiles basking on the banks. Morning: A Final Safari & The Baboon Cliff Panorama
After breakfast, we check out of our lodge and enjoy one last memorable game drive through the northern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park. This drive culminates at the famous Baboon Cliff, a spectacular viewpoint that offers breathtaking, panoramic vistas of the park below and the snow-capped peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains—often called the “Mountains of the Moon”—in the distance.

Afternoon: A Picturesque Journey to Kibale Forest
Following our final game drive, we embark on a scenic journey northwards to Kibale Forest National Park. The drive itself is a highlight, offering ever-changing landscapes. You’ll be treated to stunning views of the Rwenzori foothills, shimmering crater lakes, and vast savannah plains, with chances to spot wildlife even along the roadside.

We will arrive at our lodge in the late afternoon, allowing you time to relax and immerse yourself in the sounds of the rainforest, building anticipation for tomorrow’s chimpanzee tracking adventure.

Afternoon: A Community-Run Wetland Wonder
In the afternoon, experience a different ecosystem at the community-managed Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. This tranquil swamp forest is a brilliant contrast to Kibale, offering excellent opportunities to spot other primates like the red colobus and blue monkey, as well as rare birds like the magnificent Great Blue Turaco.
