Day 1: Begin Your Uganda Gorilla Trek by Traveling to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Home of the Mountain Gorillas)

Your safari guide will meet you at your accommodation in Entebbe, Kampala, or Kigali. Typically, our Uganda gorilla trek starts at 07:00 AM for those arriving in Uganda. If your journey begins in Kigali, we can accommodate departures between 8 AM and 2 PM. We also offer complimentary pick-up from Entebbe or Kigali Airport for those arriving on the same day; please ensure your flight lands in Entebbe by 11 AM or Kigali by 1 PM.

Before heading to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the guide will provide an overview of the tour. The drive will take you through scenic landscapes, including traditional farmlands, mountains, and valleys. Your guide will gladly stop at various picturesque locations for you to enjoy the views and take photos, including a visit to the Equator line crossing just 75 km from Kampala, a notable landmark with stunning scenery.

If departing from Entebbe or Kampala, you’ll take a one-hour lunch break in Mbarara city before continuing the final three-hour drive, which winds through mountains, tropical rainforests, and bamboo forests.

Your accommodation for the night before the gorilla trek is situated on the park’s edge, just minutes away from the Bwindi Park headquarters, making it convenient on the day of your tracking. Dinner will be served at your lodge or camp.

The total travel time to the mountain gorilla sanctuary is over 7 hours when starting from either Entebbe or Kampala, primarily on well-maintained roads with approximately 45 minutes on a bumpy gravel road. If preferred, a flight to Bwindi is available, with one-way fares ranging from $280 to $360 per person.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Today, engage in gorilla trekking in Bwindi, which is regarded as the pinnacle of the Uganda Gorilla Trek Tour by many visitors.

It is advisable to have breakfast early (before 7 am) to ensure that we reach the Bwindi Park headquarters on time for the pre-trek briefing. Your tour guide will be available while you enjoy your meal at the lodge, as most accommodations we reserve are conveniently located near the park offices.

At the park office, you will need to provide your passport or a copy as part of the accreditation process. Following this, a briefing will be conducted, covering what to expect during your encounter with the mountain gorillas, the environmental significance of gorillas, their conservation status, and other wildlife inhabiting Bwindi. Typically, a local women’s group will perform cultural music for the guests during this session. Afterward, you will be assigned to a specific gorilla group to track. This allocation takes into account the gorillas’ locations, the physical capabilities and ages of the guests, and if desired, you may request a particular gorilla group. As of May 2025, Bwindi boasts 23 habituated gorilla families available for tracking.

In some instances, it may be necessary to drive a short distance before reaching the starting point of the trail to the gorillas; however, most trails begin at the park offices. The trek through the rainforest and bamboo-covered hills will be guided by rangers and gorilla trackers as we search for the designated mountain gorilla family. Often, we will navigate along recently established paths leading deep into Bwindi’s dense jungles. Given that this region is an Afro-Montane rainforest, the likelihood of rain during the day is high, so preparation is essential.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi can sometimes be more challenging than anticipated, potentially lasting up to 6 hours. The park guides are attentive to the needs of all visitors, making frequent stops along the trek and selecting paths that ensure comfort for everyone, including those who might be physically challenged.

Upon spotting the impressive silverback mountain gorillas, any physical discomfort will soon fade away. To maintain safety for both the gorillas and yourselves, rangers will instruct you to maintain a distance of at least 6 meters from the animals. Additionally, wearing a face mask is recommended to reduce the risk of disease transmission. Enjoy an hour in the company of the mountain gorillas, taking in their large, expressive eyes, capturing photos, and yes – taking selfies, too!

After this unforgettable experience, you will begin the trek back. Along the way, the park guides will identify a secure location for you to enjoy your packed lunch amidst the jungle. As you return, keep an eye out for other wildlife in the forest. The area is home to chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkeys, red-tailed and blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus, and olive baboons. Bwindi is also renowned for birdwatching, featuring over 350 bird species, including seven that are listed on the IUCN Red Data list and 90% of all Albertine Rift endemics, which can be hard to spot in other parts of East Africa. Additionally, expect to see forest elephants, buffalo, bushbucks, and serval cats among the diverse mammal population in Bwindi.

This area is characterized by its fertile, mountainous landscape, featuring steep hills adorned with meticulously terraced agricultural plots. As we pass through Mbarara, you’ll also catch sight of the striking longhorn Ankole cattle. A noteworthy stop on this journey is at the Equator line, where we will take a brief pause to experience this iconic location.

We plan to arrive in Kampala by evening to accommodate your flight home.
