Detailed Tour itinerary.

Day 1: Arrival, Rhino Trekking & The Thundering Nile

Highlights: Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Top of the Murchison Falls, Scenic Drive through the Luwero Triangle

Your Adventure Begins

Your all-inclusive Uganda safari begins this morning. Your personal driver/guide will meet you at your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe for an 8:00 AM departure. *For guests arriving today, we can provide a meet-and-greet at Entebbe International Airport for flights landing by 11:00 AM.*

After a brief overview of the incredible journey ahead, we set off northwards. We journey through the historically rich Luwero Triangle, enjoying the changing Ugandan landscapes en route to the mighty Murchison Falls National Park.

Encountering the Giants: Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Our first wildlife encounter is a memorable one at the renowned Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. As the only place in Uganda where you can track wild rhinos on foot, this sanctuary plays a vital role in the conservation of these magnificent creatures.

Upon arrival, you will receive a safety briefing from an expert ranger guide. It is essential to follow their instructions closely to ensure a safe and respectful encounter for both you and the rhinos. The trek itself is an adventure—you may drive closer to their location before proceeding on foot. Your ranger will share fascinating insights into rhino behavior and conservation efforts.

Once you locate a rhino family, you can spend up to an hour observing them in their natural habitat—an unforgettable photographic opportunity. With luck, you may see multiple families. Keep an eye out for other wildlife that call the sanctuary home, such as waterbucks, bushbucks, Uganda kobs, and various antelopes.

The Power of Murchison Falls

We then continue into Murchison Falls National Park, making a spectacular stop at the Top of the Falls. Prepare to be amazed as you witness the Nile River—the world’s longest—being forced through a narrow 7-meter gorge before exploding downwards in a 43-meter plume of spray and thunder. The raw power and beauty of this scene are simply breathtaking.

From here, we will proceed to your comfortable lodge nestled along the banks of the Nile River, where you can relax and reflect on an action-packed first day.

A Glimpse into Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest protected area, spanning 3,840 square kilometers. It is named after its most famous feature, where the Nile River plunges dramatically into the Albertine Rift. The park boasts a diverse ecosystem of savannah, borassus palm forest, and woodland, supporting an incredible concentration of wildlife.

This is a premier destination for viewing the Big Five and is especially famous for its large populations of elephants, giraffes, and the Nile crocodile. The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, offering a chance to spot the prehistoric-looking shoebill stork. The upcoming days will offer you game drives and a launch cruise to fully explore this magnificent wilderness.

The Dawn of Discovery

Today is dedicated to the raw wonders of Murchison Falls National Park. We start before the sun is high, with a planned 6:30 AM departure from the lodge. This early start is strategic, offering the best opportunity to witness the park’s predators—lions and leopards—at their most active, often concluding a night of hunting in the cool morning air.

Morning: Game Drive in the African Savannah

Venturing into the wilderness in our specially modified 4×4 safari vehicle (with a pop-up roof for unobstructed 360-degree viewing), we’ll explore the park’s vast network of tracks. Your expert guide will work tirelessly to track the movements of the park’s diverse inhabitants.

Be on the lookout for:

  • The Predators: Lions resting in the shade, and the elusive leopard.
  • The Giants: Towering giraffes, massive African elephants, and formidable herds of Cape buffalo.
  • The Grazers: Hartebeest, Uganda kob, and warthogs.

Beyond the wildlife, the landscape itself is a spectacle—a classic African panorama of rolling savannah and borassus palm forests. Have your camera ready; between the animal sightings and the stunning scenery, you’ll find yourself constantly reaching for it. Bird enthusiasts should watch for the park’s rich avian life, particularly in the delta area.

Afternoon: The Mighty Nile by Boat

After returning to the lodge for lunch and a brief respite, we embark on what many consider the pinnacle of the Murchison Falls experience: a boat cruise along the Victoria Nile towards the base of the falls.

This tranquil journey offers an unparalleled proximity to the river’s inhabitants. You will glide past massive pods of hippos, see colossal Nile crocodiles basking on the banks, and be treated to a dazzling display of birdlife, from jewel-toned kingfishers to the legendary, prehistoric-looking shoebill stork.

The Foot of the Falls & An Optional Ascent

The boat journey culminates at the powerful base of Murchison Falls. Here, you will feel the thunderous vibration and mist on your face as the entire Nile River forces itself through a mere 7-meter cleft before plunging 43 meters. It is a humbling and awe-inspiring display of nature’s power.

At this point, you have a choice:

  1. Return by Boat: Relax and enjoy the scenic cruise back.
  2. Optional Hike to the Top: For an additional $20 per person, you can embark on a guided 45-minute to 1-hour hike from the boat landing to the top of the falls. This challenging but rewarding trail offers breathtaking views of the Murchison Gorge and the smaller Uhuru Falls. Your guide will meet you at the top to continue the journey. (Please arrange this in advance with your guide).

This area, known for its large population of Uganda Kob, acts as a magnet for predators. Our early start offers the best opportunity to spot the park’s famous lions, who are often most active in the cool morning hours, either on the hunt or resting after a successful night.

Day 9: The Pinnacle of Adventure – Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Highlights: An unforgettable hour with a Mountain Gorilla family, trekking through the ancient Bwindi forest, rich biodiversity, and optional cultural encounters.

The Day of the Giants

Today marks a defining moment of your African safari: your encounter with the endangered mountain gorillas. This is more than a tour; it’s a pilgrimage into a primordial world for a face-to-face meeting with one of our planet’s most majestic creatures.

Morning: Preparation and the Journey Begins

After an early breakfast, your driver will transfer you to the park headquarters for the essential pre-trek briefing. Here, park officials will equip you with vital information on gorilla etiquette, the ecology of Bwindi, and the profound conservation efforts that protect these primates. The air is often filled with excitement, sometimes enhanced by a vibrant performance from a local community group.

You will then be assigned to a small group of no more than eight trekkers and a specific, habituated gorilla family. Led by an experienced tracker, your journey into the “Impenetrable Forest” begins.

The Trek: A Rewarding Challenge

The trek itself is an adventure through rugged, mist-shrouded terrain. The paths can be steep and muddy, but your rangers will set a manageable pace with frequent rests, pointing out the forest’s hidden treasures—exotic birds, rare plants, and other primates like L’Hoest’s or colobus monkeys. The duration can vary from one to several hours, but the anticipation makes every step worthwhile.

The Encounter: A Moment You Will Never Forget

The moment of discovery is pure magic. As you first lock eyes with a massive silverback or watch an infant playfully tumble through the foliage, any fatigue instantly vanishes. You are granted one precious hour to observe these gentle giants from as close as 6 meters.

They will go about their daily life—feeding, grooming, resting—largely indifferent to your awestruck presence. You are free to take photos and videos (your ranger may even help you get the perfect shot). We recommend bringing a face mask to protect the gorillas from human-borne germs.

Pro-Tip: Consider hiring a local porter (approx. $15). They provide invaluable assistance on the trail and offer a direct way to contribute to the local community, allowing you to focus entirely on the experience.

Afternoon: Reflection and Cultural Immersion

After your life-changing hour, you will trek back to the starting point, your mind and camera full of memories. The forest remains alive with activity, so stay vigilant—you may even spot another gorilla group.

The remainder of your day is for reflection. If you return with energy to spare, we highly recommend the optional Batwa Cultural Experience. This immersive walk with the indigenous Batwa people, the original inhabitants of this forest, offers a poignant insight into their ancient way of life and deep connection to this ecosystem.

Return to your lodge for a relaxed evening, where you can share stories with fellow travelers and fall asleep to the sounds of the jungle, forever changed by your encounter.

Optional Upgrade: For an even more in-depth encounter, the Gorilla Habituation Experience ($700 extra) allows four hours with a gorilla group undergoing habituation.

Bwindi Accommodation Options (Full Board)

Day 10: Cultural Canoeing on the Scenic Lake Bunyonyi

Today is dedicated to relaxation and cultural connection amidst some of Uganda’s most stunning scenery. A short, scenic drive through rolling, terraced hills brings you to the breathtaking Lake Bunyonyi. Known as the “Place of Many Little Birds,” its calm, bilharzia-free waters are the perfect setting to unwind.

We embark on a guided canoe journey, peacefully traversing the lake to the Kyabahinga peninsula. Here, you’ll be welcomed with uplifting songs and dances by the local community—an authentic and joyful cultural encounter. Savor a taste of local life with a traditional brew before a gentle walk up the verdant slopes.

The experience is enriched by a meeting with a local herbalist, who reveals the secrets of the region’s medicinal plants. The panoramic views of the lake and its islands are the perfect backdrop for a tranquil afternoon of reflection.

Key Improvements in These Versions:

  • Engaging Titles: “Serenity & Song” and “Cultural Canoeing” are more evocative.
  • Context: Positions the day as the perfect relaxing contrast to the physical gorilla trek.
  • Vivid Language: Uses words like “gliding,” “mirror-like,” “heartwarming,” and “breathtaking panoramas.”
  • Improved Flow: Creates a smooth narrative from the drive to the canoe trip to the cultural encounter.
  • Adds Value: Explains the meaning of “Lake Bunyonyi” and frames the herbalist visit as a unique learning experience.
  • Professional Polish: Removes repetitive phrases and presents the information in a more compelling, benefit-oriented way.

Journey east today, tracing a path through Ugandan history. We pass through Mbarara, the former royal capital of the powerful Ankole Kingdom, a realm that flourished for over 400 years. This land of legendary long-horned cattle guides us to our final safari destination: the intimate and beautiful Lake Mburo National Park.

As one of only two parks in Uganda where you can see Burchell’s zebra, Lake Mburo offers a unique wildlife experience. Its rolling, acacia-dotted hills are a stage for impressive herds of antelope, including the majestic eland. An afternoon game drive immerses you in this compact ecosystem, offering fantastic sightings of zebra, topi, buffalo, and a rich variety of acacia-associated birds, providing a final, beautiful chapter to your wildlife adventures.

A Fond Farewell to the Wild

Savor the final moments of your Ugandan adventure with an early morning game drive. As the sun rises, the park is alive with activity; this is the perfect time to spot nocturnal creatures like hyenas returning to their dens and hippos trudging back to the water after a night of grazing. You’ll have one last chance to admire the park’s residents—herds of zebra, impala, topi, and buffalo. With a bit of luck, you might even catch a rare glimpse of the secretive sitatunga antelope, a master of camouflage that lives within the papyrus swamps.

Homeward Bound with Lasting Memories

Return to your lodge for a leisurely late breakfast and to complete your checkout. We then begin our journey back towards civilization, driving east from the park.

No trip is complete without a stop at the iconic Uganda Equator line. Here, you can capture the classic photograph with one foot in each hemisphere and witness the fascinating “polar water experiment” that demonstrates the Coriolis Effect. It’s also an excellent opportunity for some last-minute souvenir shopping at the local craft shops and to experience the vibrant colors of a Ugandan fruit market.

We will arrive in Kampala/Entebbe in the early evening, giving you ample time to check in for your international flight home.
